1 post · Joined 2005. #2 · Jan 4, 2005. I have an E39 540 with std business audio. I take my music seriously (and used to work in the trade), but wanted a realistic upgrade. The existing mid and top end from the standard BMW unit is surprisingly good, and would not be improved significantly by replacing with £600 speakers in the same position.

I have made some measurements and figured that the dimentions of the existing speaker and mounting is as follows: Diagonal mounting holes 140mm/~5.5" Perpendicular mounting holes 99mm/~3.89"

With the BMW E39 5-series, you have 5.25"/130mm speakers in the parcel shelf on DSP cars and in the rear doors on most non-DSP cars. In the front, you have a 5.25"/130mm woofer in the door - inside a molded ABS sealed enclosure (rare in door speakers - more on this in a bit).

I finally pulled the trigger and replaced the entire DVD Navigation system including head unit, amplifiers, subwoofers etc. The new Pioneer 2 Piece DMH-C2500NEX Android Auto/Carplay fits nicely in the E39 factory space with no modification of the heater core required.
